My mantra is "Don't take pictures, make photographs." When one works at
making a photograph, the subjects can speak in their own voice. What
results is hopefully more than just a picture of something, but a photograph that is something.
The complex machinery of my grandfather's cameras and the mystery of the
photographic process ignited my fascination with the medium. Life and Vogue became my first look at the revolutionary influence of photographic masters.
At an early age, a paper route was a vehicle to earn money for the first
camera. Soon, a home darkroom helped spool the tangled threads of
experience into useful technique. After graduating with a Bachelor of
Arts degree from Detroit's prestigious College for Creative Studies,
professional photography in New York City and Detroit further polished
my work.
My gratitude for all the mentors who have shared their experience is expressed by striving to create not just pictures, but photographs.
